Dunning, Dunning’s OLI Paradigm The eclectic paradigm developed by John Dunning (1977,1993) provides a holistic approach to explain FDI activities. It elaborates that firms’ FDI behavior is determined by ownership, location and internalization advantages. The basic assumption behind this theory is that in order to invest in a foreign country a firm needs to have three different types of advantages It is John Dunning’s OLI that envelopes all three aspects. In the OLI, O stand for Ownership advantages specific to the firm (which need not be monopolistic, but could also be due to efficiency).
